This presentation addresses the challenges that the bereaved often face in coping with the painful yearning of grief and of having their needs met by professionals, family, and friends. Having challenged the several misconceptions about the nature of loss, this talk explores what is known about the nature and course of grief, before concluding with an examination of best practices in alleviating the suffering of the bereaved.

 

Learning Objectives

  • Gain an appreciation for the unhelpful myths that have become common within mainstream American culture about the nature of grief and the needs of the bereaved.

  • Gain a deeper understanding for what grief entails and how it differs from other forms of psychological distress

  • Gain practical insights into how to help those enduring grief and loss.

About the Presenter

Presenter: Abigail Waller is a licensed clinical social worker with over 20 years of experience in mental health. She is also a bereaved mother and a co-founder of the Children’s Palliative Care Coalition of Michigan who specializes in grief and loss in MSU’s Counseling and Psychiatric Services.
