2021 Advocacy Webinars

The Coalition is pleased to host two virtual sessions designed for healthcare providers and families to learn how to advocate and maximize the impact of their "stories" to Michigan lawmakers, stakeholders, and the media. It is imperative to tell these stories - stories of struggles of caring for children with chronic and medically complex illnesses - to "Let Our Voices Be Heard".  This training session will help all attendees overcome the barriers to effective grassroots advocacy by demystifying the legislative process, knowing when and why to act, and learning how to tell their stories with concise, persuasive messages to legislators, stakeholders, and members of the media.

"Advocacy in Action", will be held on Monday, June 14 from noon – 1:00 pm. This session will consist of a panel discussion where participants will hear from several people that have advocated for relevant legislation in Michigan and at the Federal level.  Panelists include:

  • Dawn Krause, mother of Will, discussing the power behind the several-year efforts to pass the laws allowing appropriate advance directives for Michigan's public schools.

  • John Person, Executive Director of Hospice of Lansing, discussing his experience with the Michigan Home Care and Hospice Association (MHHA) Capitol Day and meetings with lawmakers,

  • Dr. Jeanne Lewandowski, Palliative Care Physician at Beaumont Hospital,

  • Sandi Jones, lobbyist for MHHA, will join to share her perspectives and assist with the Q & A portion of the session.

If you missed the first session "Advocacy Training 101", on Monday, May 10, the link to the recording can be found here. Jean Doss, advocacy educator and lobbyist with over 30 years of experience explains how to connect with lawmakers when advocating for services patients’ and their families need..
